The Truth About Fad Diets

If you’re like most men or women looking to lose weight, you want that weight off as quickly as possible. You may not particularly care what it takes, you just want that weight gone.
As such, you are the kind of person who may start to fall prey to fad diets, which are diets that promise ultra fast results but that aren’t really based around sound dieting principles.

If you’ve ever done a fad diet before however, you know that they are not that pleasant to be on.
In addition to that, they are by no means an effective way to go about your fat loss goals.
Let’s take a closer peek at the problem with fad diets so that you can get this straight once and for all.

How To Spot A Fad Diet

A fad diet is typically any diet that promises that you will see incredibly fast results, often by completely eliminating certain foods out from the protocol or going to extremes.
Some of the clear signs that the approach you’re looking at, is in fact a fad diet, is if it promises results that seem just a bit too good to be true, if requires you to only eat certain food combinations, if it ignores basic health and good nutrition principles, if it is not backed by any scientific evidence, and if it explicitly states that you should be not be exercising. There are many diets like this; Atkins was a famous fad diet as it required you to cut out all carbohydrates, but unless you are intolerant to carbs, this is just not necessary.  It had even been noted that although the diet was extremely popular at one point, the diet was not beneficial for you in the long run, as a low-carbohydrate meal could be linked to a bad heart and increased cholesterol level.
So if you are considering a diet, make sure you’ve got sufficient research around it, and everything that is required of you.

The Problems With Fad Diets

Why should you be turning away from all fad diets?
The biggest problem with the fad diet is that even if you do lose weight, you are putting your health in jeopardy. And, normally the weight you lose with fad diets isn’t the fat weight that you want to lose, but rather it’s a combination of muscle mass, tissue and water.

So even though you may think that you’re on track and getting leaner, you really aren’t.
The next big issue with fad diets is that they will put you at risk for a number of nutritional deficiencies and when these occur, you could risk many long term health problems, as mentioned earlier.

While being at your goal weight is great, not if it comes at the expense of sustaining proper health.
Finally, fad diets can develop into full-blown eating disorders in time if you aren’t careful. Most don’t have you fostering a healthy relationship with food at all, so rather than teaching you life-long smart food selection skills, they are teaching you that most foods are bad and that it’s best to eat as little as possible.
This is not the way to a healthy body.

Choosing A Diet Wisely

So as you go about picking a diet plan, choose one that includes foods from all food groups and is as balanced as possible.
If it encourages a regular intake of fresh fruits and vegetables, lean proteins, healthy fats, and select whole grains, you know you’re off to a good start.
As long as you keep a balanced diet and try to exercise as often as you can, you will be on the right track to a healthier lifestyle.
