Mini-Workouts: Making the Most Out of Household Chores

Household chores can be a great way to clean the house and keep it organized. Not only that it is a nice way to burn some calories along the way. A lot of homeowners do not realize the value of having a mini-workout when doing simple household chores. When you do some simple chores you stand to lose about 80 t0 500 calories. It is less stressful to the body and helps one to become less prone to injury. Let us take a look on how to make the most out of household chores to get exercise and lose weight.

Garden work
Gardening is one great way to keep your yard manicured and appear beautiful. Tasks like raking, manually mowing the yard or even digging can help tone the muscles that are in your arms and legs. Digging at your yard for 30 minutes can burn about 315 calories which is about the same amount of calories being burned when you are biking for 45 minutes on a flat terrain. If you do the digging vigorously for about 20 minutes more it could raise your heart rate and give your cardiovascular system a good workout.
Washing the car
When the car is full of dirt and grime don’t bring it to the car wash. It is better to do the washing at home because it can give you a better workout. When you clean your car using no machines but only with the good old bucket, with some soap and a rag will give you at least 143 calories for a good 30 minutes of cleaning. Washing your car is a good way to relieve you from stress and anxiety symptoms by focusing on the car and how you can clean it effectively. Not only that it could also strengthen your core, arms and other abdominal muscles. Of course, you will also get a cleaner car.

Washing the clothes
With the advent of washing machines and dryers, washing clothes by hand has become a very rare occasion. If detergent makes your hard itchy due to allergic reactions then it would be better to use the weight of the laundry hamper and use it as resistance. Keep your back straight and squat by bending your knees deeply. Hold the weight for 15 seconds and then lower it slowly and repeat the routine. This would give you better arm muscles and lower leg muscles. It could burn as much as 125 calories if you do the routine at least for 30 minutes.

Sweeping the floor
Sweeping the floor provides a lot of opportunities to burn calories. Keep your back straight, sweep the floor by bringing the broom as far as possible and pull it in. This motion will give you a wider range of motion which may also serve as a good cardio workout. Do this sweeping motion for five minutes per room at least three times per day. You can increase the calorie burning by having a rag under one foot and rub the floor’s surface to buff the floor for an extra shine. This would give you more calories lost because you are keeping both your arms and legs busy.

Washing the plates
Washing the plates is something that would not get you to burn a lot of calories, but if you dance or move vigorously while doing it you will lose more calories than you think. You can do this not only during cleaning plates but you can also dance to upbeat music and dance to a pace where you can still talk naturally and not that out of breath. You can also do this while you clean the kitchen counter or while you are wiping the floor. Cooking is another opportunity to get some workout. Try to dance while you cook or wait for the cookies in the oven to get done. You just need to be creative in putting more activity in doing household chores.

Washing the windows
Do you remember the Karate Kid? Well Mr. Miyagi told him to clean the car through circular motion. Try to do it while swaying your hips or doing some cha-cha. Increase the movement as you do a relatively simple task at home.

Surprisingly you have to be more creative on how you can turn something that is mundane like household chores to become a complete workout. Now, people have no more excuse of not having enough time for exercise because you can have some workout by doing simple chores around the house.
